Help shop reaches milestone
Date Published : 04 September 2010
More than 270 people have been given a helping hand on the road back to work, delighted Walsall Council bosses reveal.
Fourteen people have also found work through the Walsall Town Centre One Stop Shop since June.
A team of five are based at the unit in the Challenge Building, Hatherton Street.
Councillor Adrian Andrew, Walsall Council cabinet member for regeneration, said: "This is great news. We are starting to have an impact on people's lives.
"Basically, this exists to help people get over barriers that stop them getting a job. It may be something as simple as not having the right health and safety training to work on a building site. It may be equipment or tools that are needed to get a job. It could be specialist clothing needed for work we can help with.
"To help put 14 people back into work since June is a great result and it's something we are working hard to do and improve on.
"Aside from the jobs, we've assisted 55 people with training, given careers advice to 80 and helped 26 gain a qualification.
"Overall, we've helped more than 270 people."
The Walsall Town Centre One Stop Shop serves residents in the St Matthews ward.
People are referred to the Walsall Council funded unit by Jobcentre Plus and other agencies.
Aside from careers advice and guidance, training can be paid for to help give people a first step on the career ladder.
Health and safety, food hygiene and first aid are part of a range of qualifications that are available through the shop.
The site is one of four to serve the most deprived areas of Walsall.
Aside from the Hatherton Street site, there are one stop shops located on Bloxwich High Street at Work on the Horizon, Darlaston JET in King Street with a mobile team also serving the Caldmore area.
